8 Tips Preparing for your newborn photo session

Bringing your newborn home is one of the most incredible milestones of your life. Your bundle of joy has finally arrived and it is an all new learning curve. This time can be tiring, sleep deprived, and hectic as well as exciting getting to know your new baby.

Your baby will only be so small for a short time, and in a blink of eye those first weeks disappear so quickly.

Creating beautiful memories by celebrating your baby’s arrival with gorgeous images is a gift that keeps on giving.

1. Booking your session well in advance

This saves the stress of when its going to be. Book an estimated day according to your due date. All you will need to do is contact the photographer as soon as your baby has arrived and to confirm the date.

2. What is the best age

The ideal time for Newborn sessions is the first 14 days after their arrival. The sooner, the better!

At this age, babies are more sleepy and easily squished in to those curled up newborn images. Plus, babies just tend to do a lot better with the session within their first 2 weeks. My sessions are very much baby led sessions, and we will work around your babies schedule to ensure they get the best attention possible.

There are various reasons why this age time-frame doesn’t work for some people, so if you find that you’re more comfortable planning for a later time, that’s not a problem and we can still get more of lifestyle style of images with your baby as they get a bit older.

3. Feeding your baby

Newborn baby’s generally need to be fed every couple of hours. Depending on the distance you need to travel on the day, it may be better to prepare for their feed once you arrive at the studio. That way, your baby is settled, well fed and has that milk drunk feeling.

4. Plan for the day

It is best that your newborn session is the only thing you plan on the day. Your session may run over schedule, depending on if your baby takes longer to settle in the studio environment. This is all new to your baby.

5. Bring any special items with you

Heirloom items, such as a Grandma’s shawl or Dad’s first blanket that may have been passed down through the generations of your family. A teddy that is being gifted from a special family member. All are welcome to be brought to your session.

6. Bring a Dummy

This can be one of the best things that can help your baby settle during the photo session. Being a model can be quite overwhelming for us all especially for your bub who is just starting to know the people around him.

7. Bring extra clothing

Just in case of accidents. This is clothing for Mum and Dad. Baby clothes are all taken care of in the studio.

8. Plan your outfit a few days before the big day

I can imagine it’s something you can’t be bothered about, especially just after having a baby. Take this time to think about pampering yourself, a massage, getting your hair or make up done. All will help with feeling relaxed and make you feel more comfortable on the day. It’s a beautiful time of your life and one that you will cherish forever. With regards to clothing, I recommend light neutral clothing.
